Our visit to Ringmu School Oct 2010...
...coincided with the Dashain holiday, so the turnout of staff and children was limited. This did not dampen the spirit of the occasion and we, the guests led by Geoff Plant, were in a festive mood. School books, kindly donated by Room to Read and Doria Moodie, were distributed to the children. Geoff, with a backup chorus, read and danced the pictorial story of a yak. It was a knockout show that has already been requested for a return visit in 2011!
Ringmu elementary school services the northern area of the Solu district and is located just below the Tragsingdo pass at 9,000'. 65 children attend with some walking from as far away as one hour. There are 5 teachers, one of whom is paid by our Nepal School Fund. We have also assisted with the addition of an assembly hall, and windows, doors, and furniture for classrooms. We were impressed with the teaching programs in each of the classrooms and the general orderliness of the school.
This year, our trek sirdar was the resourceful Rinji Sherpa. Little did we know that he was wearing two hats, as he turned out to be the school committee chairman as well! Rinji and his wife are front and centre in the group photo below.
